Fall riding is the best and this past weekend was no exception. Finally the state made decent changes to trails at the Maumee State Forest in northwest Ohio. The switchbacks remind me of the trails at St. Helen, MI and Croom Motocross Park in Brooksville, FL. MSF still has some of the absolute worst riding conditions one can expect in one place, but things are getting better. Maybe one day the state-sanctioned trails will be as good as the unsanctioned trails.
The last time I had my X2 out of the garage was for the mud nationals back in April. Normally when I get back home from a mud ride I get the pressure washer out, clean everything up to see if I damaged or broke anything. This year I was very very lazy and rolled the X2 right off the trailer and into the garage without washing all the East Texas mud off. Now after a few months my bike has become encased in an adobe brick! Letting the mud set and dry like this is not a good idea.. Even though the top part of the mud looks like its dry the under side is still wet for several weeks. This allows rust to start to form on any bare metal parts. Plus it takes about 10 times as long to get dried mud off as it does when it's still pretty fresh. The easiest way I have found to get dried mud off is to put a sprinkler under the bike and let the sprinkler run for about 2o minutes or so, this will soak the adobe brick and help loosen it. Anyone who has ever read their owners manual has read the part about not washing your ATV with a pressure washer as damage could occur. I know several guys who have blown the fins on their radiators completely shut due to using too high of pressure too close. And it is not a very fun job to pull the radiator out and then have to set there straightening one fin at a time. The radiators on most stock ATV's are not easy to get to for cleaning. I generally keep at least 3 feet back from the radiator when blasting it with high pressure. Other places you want to watch for are seals, CV and ball joint boots. After I get the bike as clean and mud free as possible, I do a complete after ride inspection of the bike. This will be covered in upcoming articles in ATV ESCAPE.
RPM Fest is one of the largest events of its kind in the country. Over three days spectators will get to see everyting from Monster Truck racing to Lawn mower racing. My favorit part of being a photog/writer for magazines is the fact that I get to travel to places I would normally never have the opertunity to see. On this trip my dad and nephew Dontay will be comeing with me. My dad and I are taking our motorcycles with us to take a ride up along the shores of Lake Michigan. The drive from our home town of Boise City, Ok to La Porte, In will take us 1065 miles one way.
